Becoming BLS Certified | Basic Life Support for Respiratory Therapists
Basic Life Support certification refers to the type of education that respiratory therapists, and others receive in order to make sure they're prepared to provide emergency care in case of cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, or airway obstruction.
A respiratory therapist and must learn the important AHA chain of survival, specifically the BLS (breathing, airway, circulation) components. Teams play an important role in multi rescuer CPR. These skills are needed to be able to provide care for patients with cardiac arrest.
The American Heart Association recommends that all health professionals who have access to a defibrillator should be trained in CPR and use it as part of their emergency response plan.
Basic Life Support (BLS) – Initial Provider is a five hour, instructor-led classroom course offers education for respiratory therapists needing certification documenting completion of training in Basic Life Support CPR.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – Initial Provider and Intermediate Provider are two-day, instructor led courses that offer the same curriculum as BLS but with an emphasis on cardiac arrest management. The ACLS course is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to recognize and treat a patient experiencing cardiac arrest. Students will gain confidence and competence in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including the administration of medications and equipment used during CPR.
Respiratory Therapist License Renewal
You will need to re-register for your respiratory therapy license every two years before it expires on the first day of your birthday month. You'll receive a renewal notice from the Texas Department of State Health Service at least 30 days before the expiration date of your license, and you must return a completed renewal form and payment in order to renew your driver's license. You must also complete an important remaining requirement to renew the license: continuing education.
Each two-year license cycle, you must complete at least 24 hours (or more) of continuing education. To be eligible for renewal of your license as a respiratory therapist, your continuing education must improve your skills as a respiratory therapy provider that will directly benefit your clients. Continuing education examples include:
- College education that is part of a respiratory care education program
- 15 clock-hours are considered to be equivalent to one semester credit
- Respiratory therapist coursework, conferences, seminars, and workshops
- In-service training offered at healthcare facilities
- Up to half of your continuing education can be obtained through self-study such as through online respiratory therapy courses

A PALS certification is generally only required for medical personnel who work with neonatal or pediatric patients, although it may be required for every RT in some facilities.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation respiratory therapists are required to maintain a BLS certification, which includes the deliverance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). They must also maintain an ACLS certification as well because they often work with patients in critical care units. v
As a respiratory therapist, it is essential to have BLS certification in order to effectively respond to emergencies and keep patients' blood circulation and breathing stable. BLS involves performing chest compressions and artificial respiration techniques on patients who are in cardiac or respiratory arrest. However, RTs may also need ACLS certification depending on the specific needs of their facility. ACLS generally builds on the skills learned in BLS and focuses on more advanced procedures such as defibrillation and drug therapy. PALS certification may also be required for RTs who work with neonatal or pediatric patients.
CPR is an emergency medical procedure used to help patients who are in cardiac or respiratory arrest, and involves repeatedly compressing the chest and providing artificial respiration.
Basic Life Support is a type of cardiopulmonary resuscitation that is performed without equipment or medications to assist with the immediate survival of a patient who is in cardiac or pulmonary arrest.
It involves delivering high-quality chest compressions and ventilations and the use of an AED if necessary. BLS courses and certifications are required for healthcare professionals and others who need to know how to perform cardiovascular life support skills.
BLS Procedure
To give a brief summary, the process of BLS goes like this:
Make sure that the scene is secure before checking the patient for a response, and then check the patient. If there is no response, you should open the airway by using a head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver.
Look, listen, feel for breathing. If there is no breathing, call for emergency services and send for an AED. Then you immediately need to begin chest compressions and rescue breaths at a ratio of 30:2. Give 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths and then repeat this cycle.
Once the AED arrives, place the electrode pads on your chest and follow the instructions of the device. It will determine whether the patient has a life threatening heart rhythm and deliver an electric shock if necessary.
If no shock is advised, you can continue CPR until the emergency services arrive.
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), is an advanced form of Emergency Life Support for the treatment of Cardiac Arrest, Stroke, Myocardial Infarction, and other Life Threatening Cardiovascular Emergencies.
It’s an advanced type of emergency care which extends basic life support (BLS) capabilities beyond immediate ventilator and circulatory assistance.

ACLS is typically a group effort that is performed by a team of doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists. Each provider is specially trained and should have their ACLS certification while working in a setting that may require emergency life support.
What is Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)?
PALS is an advanced form of pediatric emergency life support for treating cardiovascular emergencies in children.
The PALS program aims to achieve the best possible outcome for pediatric patients in emergency situations.
PALS is similar in concept to ACLS but is designed specifically for the care of critically ill infants and young children instead of adults.
